Kimberley Outback Adventure (Part 2)

Our first night at Kandiwal there was a party at the airstrip.
Don't you love the Mitchell Plateau Arrival and Departure Lounge!
Just up from the Kandiwal Community there are two wilderness
lodges, APT Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge and
Outback Spirit Ngauwudu Safari Camp.
Staff from both camps, along with some of the
rangers, were there. We met some lovely young
people and it was a fun night.
Noel and I had some lovely scenery
for our early morning walks. This is our first one.
When we got back, some of the kids were already there.
School didn't start until 8am but they would get there
about 7.30am. After they got to know us, they seemed to
arrive for school earlier and earlier each day.
One day they were there about 6.15am!
They were then told not to get there before 7.30 after that.
Noel and I slept in the school room each night as there
was no room for us in the donga (house).
The kids would never come into the school room until we said they could.
The kids do Kimberley School of the Air.
Paula is there to supervise them but their actual teachers
are in Derby. Most of the other children are from
remote stations in the Kimberley.
We all helped out in the classroom which was a lot of fun.
This is Carmen-Lee. She is the youngest and
doing kinder. I would sit were her for each lesson as
they like to have an adult sitting with the kinder kids.
It was great to see how the kids interact
with the teacher and other students.
There was cricket at recess and they loved
playing with Noel and Ian.
The kids called me "Auntie", Noel was "Uncle",
Ian was "Uncle Mr" as he was Paula's father.
Paula was "Miss". They would often come up to the
door of the donga and say
"Auntie, are you there?" or "Where's Uncle?".
The end of the day.
We saw so many beautiful sunsets.

What wonderful adventures you had Christine! I am enjoying all your photos & your stories around them. Quite a different "holiday" but so wonderful & amazing scenery. I'll bet the kids just loved having you for a teacher. Apologies I've not been on blogland as I've been away to my Mums again. I am slowly catching up on everyones posts. xx
