Welcome to my day at the Ho Ho Ho Blog Hop. A big thank you to Madame Samm (Sew We Quilt) and Carol (Just Let Me Quilt) for organising this fun hop.
For my project, I thought I would give it an Aussie touch. Kookaburras! When we were kids, we would sing the Kookaburra song.
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
Merry, merry king of the bush is he.
Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra.
Gay you life must be!
For my international visitors, this song was written by Marion Sinclair in 1932 for an Australian Round Song contest being held by the Victorian Girl Guides. Her Kookaburra song won. (Those were the days when gay meant something else!).
We often get kookaburras in the trees around the house and I still love to hear them "laugh".
I've been wanting to make this stitchery for such a long time and thought this was the perfect opportunity to make it. I had thought about giving this hanging to one of my Christmas swap partners but I've fallen in love with it! So, sorry girls. I'll be making you something else! LOL!

I was visiting your country with my husband some 20 years ago (gosh, time is flying!!!), we only did wild camping in national parks or somewhere in nowhere, and these lovely (but loud!) birds were often there wishing us a good morning! I always wondered how big they are, I love them! Your stiching is very nice, the buttons are perfect for your quilt, very nice! If you have time once, could you email me the shop where you buy your buttons, or your favourite shops site? that would be very nice!!

Love your Kookaburra stitching! Even though I'm in the US, we learned this song in grade school. When I was a docent at our local zoo, the Kookaburra's would let me skritch their backs and were quite friendly. Thanks for sharing!

Love this stitchery and don't blame you for keeping it! I learned this song in camp in New Hampshire. We knew it was about Australia because our counselor had to tell us what a Kookaburra and a gum tree were, but we never knew the whole story.

And love the reminder of that song. :) Back when I was in grammar school we sang that song in Girl Scouts...my sister and I loved it so much that when traveling with our family we sang it over and over and over in round robins. Before I read past the first paragraph, I already had the Kookaburro song playing in my head, but I couldn't remember all the words - I learned in during piano lessons many years ago! Loved the stitchery :) now I know what a Kookaburro looks like!!

What an absolutely adorable stitching and I love the plaid border! I am glad to hear that you are keeping it for yourself. I chuckled at your comment that in 1932, gay meant something else! My first husband has a brother who is gay, bi, something. One day something was said about it when our children were young. My son said he knew it meant happy, but what else did it mean?
